Each year, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action sponsors an international
celebration of breastfeeding, emphasizing a particular issue that impacts breastfeeding
around the world. This year the theme is "Talk to me! Breastfeeding - a 3D Experience". The theme deals with communication at various levels and between various sectors. In 2010, World Breastfeeding Week commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration that called for implementation of the Ten Steps in all maternity facilities. In 2009, the theme was "Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency Response Are you ready?" The theme drew attention to the vital role that breastfeeding plays in emergencies worldwide. In 2008 the theme was "Exclusive Breastfeeding for 6 months, the Gold Standard", an illusion to the 2008 Olympics and its gold medals.
