RG5 WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK EVENTS
August 1 - 7


Alamogordo Office -
August 2nd - 6th Alamogordo WIC displayed a bulletin board on Breastfeeding, hung bullet points all over the WIC office reinforcing breastfeeding, had a display on the table with all the Breast pumps and how to use them, breastfeeding pamphlets, and WIC staff made breastfeeding cookies for the clients and office.  Approximately  50+ people were served. 

Anthony Office -

Anthony office honored BF moms w/a BF Celebration. They had two guest speakers ( Ernesto Hernandez, LMSW who presented a 15 minute stress out/relaxation techniques and Marissa Van Dommelen, IBCLC presented on "Breastfeeding: Just 10 steps, the Baby-Friendly Way".
Breastfeeding moms received recognition through certificates and roses. Each mother also received a "goody" bag which had Breastfeeding reading materials & Breastfeeding promotional items (Breastfeeding pin, bracelet, and child's T-Shirt).
Refreshments were served.
Approximately 15 breastfeeding mothers attended and their guests.

Chaparral Office -
August 3rd - 50+ Breastfeeding mothers received a gold ribbon corsage with the number 10 in the center reflecting the ten steps for successful breastfeeding, pampered with a free haircut, massage, Mary Kay make overs, facials, cake and punch, and Chaparral Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Belem Anguiano and WIC nutritionist
Lori Costales conducted a Feeding Your Baby game emphasizing the benefits of breastfeeding with lots of prizes.  Pregnant women received a Medela breastfeeding starter kit, nursing pads, lanolin, and information.  Breastfeeding mothers received LA Publishing Go Green breastfeeding totebags and their newest issue of MOM+BABY magazine.

Southern NM Border Breastfeeding Taskforce -

August 6th - Five WIC breastfeeding taskforce members participated in the joint celebration of World Breastfeeding Week and the End of Semester Celebration of the Women's Intercultural Center to 100+ women.
Joint celebrations provided several speakers, ballet folklorico, potluck luncheon, door prizes, and the Southern NM Border Breastfeeding taskforce provided Go Green Breastfeeding tote bags.

Deming Office -

August 4th - Deming WIC held a breastfeeding celebration and approximately 14 breastfeeding mothers and their guests attended.  Breastfeeding mothers received corsages, certificates, gift bags, played games that reinforced benefits of breastfeeding, winners received prizes of breastmilk storage bags and nursing pads, pictures were taken of each breastfeeding mother and her baby to be developed and given to breastfeeding mother at a later date.  A peer to peer facilitated breastfeeding discussion was held. A drawing for a beautiful crochet baby blanket that was made by WIC Clerk Diana Martinez was held at end of event.

East Mesa -
East Mesa WIC Clinic began distributing fliers a month prior by announcing the World Breastfeeding Week's events on office bulletin board. The fliers were essential to the week's events for if the client/s brought back flier they were entered into a drawing that offered an opportunity to win a package of diapers, baby wipes, and other gifts.
On August the 3rd Breastfeeding Peer Counselor set up a table with pamphlets referencing the 10 easy step idea, business cards, useful breastfeeding and pregnancy information, snacks, and beverages.
Breastfeeding Peer Counselor provided individual counseling and assistance and the drawing of 6 prizes was conducted at end of ceremony.

Hatch -

Hatch WIC recognized their breastfeeding mothers by presenting them with a certificates and a breastfeeding milk storage bag.

Holloman -
Holloman WIC set up a breastfeeding display at the Airforce Base Exchange that included handouts on the Ten Steps and Breastfeeding Calendars.  Baby socks were handed out to breastfeeding moms along with an explanation of the 10 steps. Over the course of the week, Holloman WIC handed out over 120 flyers, over a dozen pairs of socks, and other items.

Sunland Park -
Month of August - Sunland Park WIC is celebrating Breastfeeding mothers the entire month of August every Wednesday.  Breastfeeding mothers are given Breastfeeding certificates, snacks, photo, bag of goodies, and door prizes.  Sunland Park WIC has approximately 175 breastfeeding mothers.

Silver City -
August 6th - Participation by the entire PHO office in Silver City, Southwest NM Breastfeeding Council, Grant County Cooperative Extension , Region 5 with Silver City WIC's "Breastfeeding Celebration Day." Between 60-70 breastfeeding mothers (not including the breastfeeding mothers that entered through the back door and their guests) were welcomed and pampered with corsages, certificates, free haircuts, manicures, pedicures, massages, make up demonstrations, food demonstrations, flowers, and food.  Drawings were held approximately every 10 - 15 minutes of disposable diapers, baby wipes, and baby blankets that were crocheted by women in prison at the Chaparral Detention center.  All Silver City staff, sponsors, and volunteers received t-shirts with the 2010 World Breastfeeding theme "Just 10 Steps! Breastfeeding the Baby-Friendly Way." 
Ruidoso -
Ruidoso WIC placed a Breastfeeding Display in front lobby, bulletin board reinforced breastfeeding, breastfeeding banner was hung, breastfeeding videos were played in lobby, and breastfeeding mothers were given certificates.
