$3500 spent on mini-grants
Carol also compiled a list of what types of activities were done for WBW.

House Memorial 58 Task Force Work

Currently no policies to support students who are pregnant and will need support bfing their infants. Currently, unknown the number of students who attend schools who are pregnant or bfing.
Focus on mid to high-school age thru graduate students to survey on needs of these students who need accommodations for breastfeeding their infants.

Also, currently they are considered in the Office of Women's Health Policy
Now they are a governor's task force.

Deborah Boyles -Valencia County BFTF

$1000 --sling orders to be given to mothers in last trimester or when they have their baby -- have spent @ $600 on slings $18 each
Had WBW at Ann Becker park-served @ 200 people.

Chavez County BFTF-Carrie Weems and Peggy Ortiz

Nurse at hospital provided a staff training for nursing staff for WBW.  BFTF provided lunch.
WBW at WIC office -Bfing Bingo!
Carol has a BF Jeopardy game will forward to TF members.

Jim needs the title of the conference to post to website.

UNM wants to adapt the bFing bill of rights.  Stephanie from UNM wants to champion it.
Jacie--Speaking to Medela to encourage them to create tear sheets that discuss appropriate pumps for each situation specifically pump in style is not approp. For hi risk situations.  and hospitals regarding pump in style NOT appropriate for infants who are hospitalized.  Hospitals are suggesting mothers use Pump in style for infants in nursery.

Mary Gruszka-SWNMBFTF-GRMC
Grant Project (from NMBFTF) of establishing support groups in the 4 county area.  Give out homemade slings for mothers who have attended the support groups.  Attendance is unreliable.

Memorial Medical Center voted to eliminate the formula advertising bags. 
Nice Article appeared in newspaper and local magazine promoting breastfeeding and Kathy quoted as well.

(Carol states that Womens Hospital going to meet @ doing away with the formula bags.) 
WBW-public service announcements at Christian radio station.  Posters from babies love hugs-skin to skin-were purchased and given to hospitals for display.
Display at Barnes and Noble-list of references of Bfing books, etc.  News article in newpaper full color and page.  Article distributed in Healthy U magazine.

Elsa has been working with the department as buildings are being redesigned in order to include breastfeeding rooms.

Low Iron in Breast Fed Babies has been reported in a Journal article and WIC population-per Susan Nalder --NMDOH epidemiologist
Jim states: Iron levels drop some after a recent virus.
1 gram per week can be repaired with iron therapy.
1 gram =3 points on HCT
MMR drops a HCT for the several weeks following
FRANK OSKI -study of exc bf for 1 year. No Fe or other foods and those infants were not anemic.
Formula interfers with the absorption of iron.

Dr Fisk is interested in the Issue of BFing in the Developing World.  Group discussed  Nestle's influence on BFing rates

Working on sending calendar to printing - should be ready by December.
WBW- gave out water bottles and chocolates to all BFing mothers. Gave 'goodie-bags' the Health care staff and gave water bottles to other tribal employee's in community.

Promoting BFing at Capital High School--Project
Want to work with administration at capital high school to have a teen parent center and set up pumping center.  Will need to survey the schools to determine how the TF can support them.

Concerned @ ABQ BFTF    people around ABQ want to be involved with the ABQ TF, but not scheduled meetings.    Want to network to meet other BF supporters quarterly to form regular ABQ BFTF meetings.  Jacie thinking @ a poster to be displayed at the NMBFTF conference to advertise this.

Presbyterian mobile Sundae cart to give hospital nurses sundaes for WBW activities. 
Website for employees to describe what resources are available and help employees design a plan for their pumping schedules. 
Next project mandatory CE on line to decrease the amount of supp the babies get on PP unit.
Carol Audits patient charts:  why they got the formula & documented that if mother requested formula that the hospital staff did educate that formula does impact BFing. 

Note: Slow flow bottles should be 1 drip per minute

USBC Conference 2010 Plans:

Elsa and one other member will attend the USBC meeting in Washington in January.  We would like to invite someone from the northern part of NM, maybe Rebecca in Farmington.  Kathy Douglas will be the alternate.  Sharon will attend as the WIC representative.

The New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force holds statewide meetings in Albuquerque, on a quarterly basis, usually  at the First Choice Community Health North Valley Office, 1231 Candelaria NW. The Candelaria meetings are potluck, so remember to bring a dish to share!   Meetings for 2009 are sceduled for  March 11 at 1 pm at the Albuquerque Marriot Hotel (in association with the Annual Conference  March 12 and 13),  May 8, September 11, and December 4.
